Identify a Well-Designed Web Page

The web is, first and foremost, about content. But we cannot separate content from form and function. That is, the design of a page is as much a part of its content as the text, images, formatting, and usability on it. So, as we begin our exploration of web authoring, it's important for us to have a common language to discuss design.

The goal of this assignment is to use that common language to discuss the design of actual sites. But before we get to that, let's start with some intuition. By intuition, I mean that you have enough experience to recognize a well-designed web site and I want you to think about why it is good so you can include the good features in the web sites you create.


Tasks:

  • Find a page you think is well-designed. This can be any page you know and visit, or it can be a page you happen upon while surfing something like Cool Homepages (http://coolhomepages.com). [3]
  • Comment to this Post and write a paragraph or two (or more) about the design. Essentially, answer the question "What makes this good?" [5]
  • When you comment, use your first name and last initial only. [1]
  • Self-evaluate [1]

    YouTube is just probably the greatest website ever created. It is good because it's YouTube. The website is very well designed and it is easy to access anything you type in the search bar. YouTube is used for mostly fun but also contains useful and vital information that may pertain to our daily lives. I am so happy that this kind of website exists.

    Great Website: www.youtube.com
    Because: although youtube doesnt have a very eye catching background on there website it is still a really good website. They do a good job monitoring the site to make sure nothing inappropriate gets posted. But you could sit on their website and watch videos for days. They have many options you can do when you upload your own video. Or you can like, Favorite, and dislike other people videos that are shared.

    Great Website: http://www.noaa.gov/

    Because: The web page is extremely colorful, it stands out to my eyes over others i have scene and though i may not be someone who would the weather and atmospheric info intriguing, i still would come across this site and would be wanting to learn about what it is about, it's importance. The website's design and layout also help prove that it is important and a very informative site for those seeking info on weather and Earth related issues. The background of the webpage shows a creative landscape of our Earth's atmosphere, our oceans, satellites, and the Coastguard as an attempt to shows us a visual of what this website aims to do. One thing most people wouldn't realize is the website is compatible with many social media sites which shows it can be featured in many online communties and can promote social situations and events. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's website clearly can lure in anyone just based off of it unique page art and especially it's compatibility with other social media websites.

    eBay is one of the best websites ever. You can buy cheap things used, new or refurbished. You can find about any item on eBay. You can find shoes, clothes, games, consoles, mobile devices etc. Many people use this site because of how useful it is. No one wants to spend 100 dollars on shoes. You can go to eBay and find the same pair for half the price. This is why eBay is one of the best sites out there.

    Facebook.com

    A great example of a well designed web page would have to be Facebook. Facebook has an excellent setup that can be accessed from any device. The pages never appear shrunken or distorted. Facebook's flawless design is the biggest reason for it's massive success. Mark Zuckerburg, The creator of Facebook, Did an excellent job and his creation should be respected.

    Facebook is designed in a way so finding friends, relatives, coworkers, and many others is very easy. Linking your Facebook account with other services, Such as Steam, Is also very easy. Facebook allows you to connect with anyone in the world, and see a fully detailed custom biography.

    Great Website: http://www.nhl.com/
    Because: NHL.com is an amazing website because it has so many recent events and links on it. It can navigate you to each of the 30 teams' official homepage. The website is updated daily with hockey facts and news, even during the offseason. You can get a personal biography on each player and prospect. NHL.com is an easy way to stay updated and is one of the most well designed websites.
